Participants will be taught self defense techniques based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  This self defense class will be taught by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and Self Defense Coach, Diana Trang in collaboration with the Centre for Newcomers (* see below for more information from Centre for Newcomers).

Participants will be encouraged to work in pairs to maximize opportunity for learning. No previous experience is required in order to attend.

In this Introduction into Self Defense, participants will be taught many fundamental techniques based on common attack/assault scenarios.  

These include (but are not limited to) the importance of situational awareness, stance, posture, how to break various grips. managing distance + control, takedown application, and defending strikes/pinning/strangulation/hair grabs, etc..

A workshop dedicated to teaching empowerment and self-defence skills to the community.

 About this event 

The Centre for Newcomers (CFN), in collaboration with Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) and The Immigrant Educational Society (TIES), will be conducting Empowerment Talks and Self-Defence Classes. The sessions are meant to:

• Provide hope and motivation to clients during difficult times

• Address issues of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination

• Teach clients how to respond to bullying and racism

• Be a total of 3 hours in length overall

This workshop is intended to teach empowerment and self-defence skills to people who have been or potentially could be impacted by racialized, xenophobic, or other discriminatory scenarios. An empowerment talk will be followed by an in-person concrete training of self-defence skills. The workshop will be facilitated in 3 hours for the two sessions.
